Scotia Rotary Club Pancake Festival

The Scotia Rotary Club will hold is annual Pancake Festival on Saturday, November 5 at the Glenville Senior Citizens Center on Worden Road in Glenville. The doors open at 7:00 a.m. and food will be served until 1:00 pm.

The cost for the “all you can eat” meal is $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for children. Kids under 2 years old are free. The meal includes pancakes, French toast, sausage, applesauce and assorted beverages.

Tickets will be available at the door. All proceeds will be used in the Scotia-Glenville community in the form of community service projects performed by the Scotia Rotary Club. For more information, visit www.scotiarotary.org

Thursday, Sept. 8...

Effective 4 PM, NYS DOT reopened four bridges over the Mohawk River in Schenectady County - I 890, Western Gateway, Freemans Bridge and Rexford Bridge. These bridges had been closed by DOT due to the instability of Lock 9, a large debris pile, and a 6' "head" of water that had risen upriver from Lock 9.

Current predictions for flooding are somewhat improved. Lock 9 cresting at 250' at 5 PM; Lock 8 cresting at 235' at 7 PM; and Stockade and Scotia cresting at 227 at 8 PM.

There is still a large debris pile at the Lock 9 dam. From crest elevations, river height is expected to drop 2' by 8 am Friday.

Help Needed in Scotia

One of the areas which has received the most damage is the lower Washington Ave. area of Scotia. This area is still trying to clean up as more flood waters threaten our friends and neighbors.

Many families on Washington Ave,and Shonowee Ave. in Scotia need people to help haul out and help clean their basements, and first floor. Flooring needs to be removed, sheet-rock, carpets, etc. Then they have to clean all surfaces because mildew at mold have already begun to grow on walls and sub flooring. Then they will need help with laying down new flooring, sheet-rocking walls, painting water barrier paint in basements, replacing broken basement windows, installing hot water tanks and new furnaces. Many families lost everything who live on the first floor of a 2 family home. So furniture is greatly needed. This does not begin to cover the clean up that will be needed outside their homes. If you can't donate your time, gift cards for Walmart, Kmart, Target, Loews would also be a blessing.

My parents live on Washington Ave in Scotia, and could use any of the big blowers to try to help dry out their house. they lost their basement and just about everything on their first floor. If anyone has info on renting blowers, or if there are some that could be borrowed it would be greatly appreciated. Also anyone with experience in flooring, dry wall or construction would be helpful. New Docks added to the Scotia NY Riverfront

One of the huge assets of our community has been a family friendly, comfortable yet lively river front. Thanks to two state grants totaling 1.6 million dollars additional improvements have been added this summer including 220 feet of docks.

Installed by The Dock Doctors of Lake George the plan was to provide room for eight boats and provide water hookups.

On going improvements to what has been know in the past as “Scotia Landing”. This will be the entrance to the Village of Scotia for visiting boaters.

Even July 20th, 2011 when the temperature topped 90 degrees many fans of The Audiostars arrived early to reserve their favorite spot. Luckily, it didn’t matter where you sat to enjoy the party rock of this popular local band. Even fans sitting across Schonowee Ave enjoyed fantastic entertainment and a chance to visit with neighbors and friends.

You’ll notice one of this years improvements, a protected sound booth built by the folks from Scotia Rotary.

The Audiostars always bring a big crowd even if the grass is a little wet and the heat index is above 100.

Special opening act Matthew Casillas was discovered at a Lincoln School talent show.

This year the web site VisitScotia.com celebrated its ninth year of community service to residents and folks searching for an ideal location to live. Created and maintained by BillP Studios, the first day VisitScotia.com went live with the following text.

In my continuing effort encouraging good folks to come to Scotia I’m making a big voluntary step towards helping make sure our schools remain excellent without discouraging new residents with high taxes. I hope to serve our community as a member of the Scotia-Glenville Central School Board.

The Village of Scotia will be flushing fire hydrants Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. starting Monday, April 18, 2011. The hydrant flushing program should take two weeks with a tentative completion date of Friday, April 29, 2011. Discolored water may occur during this period, so laundering should be avoided during the flushing hours.

Village Board decides against Police Consolidation

Community residents came out to voice their concern about the possible consolidation of the Village of Police with the Town of Glenville. After many inspiring speeches the Village Board said they would continue to discuss this and gave everyone an opportunity to leave before the discussion of other village business.

To the surprise of those of us who stayed, the Village Board did decide that police consolidation was not in our future.

ANNUAL CURBSIDE LARGE APPLIANCE PICK UP:

The annual curbside pick up of large appliances will be for two weeks only, from April 4, 2011 through April 15, 2011.

Each appliance to be picked up must have a sticker. Stickers may be purchased at the Village Clerk's Office. All appliances, with stickers displayed, must be placed at the curb no later than 7:00 A.M. on your regular waste collection day. Large appliances shall include washers, dryers, stoves, refrigerators, hot water tanks, dishwashers and air conditioners (please remove all latches and doors that can trap children). Large appliances DO NOT include furnaces or countertop appliances. Such items will not be picked up.

Yard Waste Collection: Yard waste collection will resume the week of April 4, 2011 and will continue until the week before Thanksgiving. As in previous years, your yard waste will be picked up on your regular trash collection day. The rules and regulations are as follows: Yard Waste shall mean residential or commercial leaf waste, lawn clippings and brush. Receptacle requirements: Yard waste consisting of grass, leaves, hedge clippings and twigs etc., shall be in either a 30 gallon compostable paper bag or a receptacle that is rigid and water proof with handles and lid, 30 gallon maximum size, with the container clearly marked Yard Waste. Either receptacle must not exceed 60 pounds. Bundled yard waste, consisting of brush and tree branches that are 4 inches or less in diameter, 4 feet or less in length and weigh less than 60 pounds, must be tied.

Traveling Museum On-Track for Continued Growth

Despite a tough economy and tighter school budgets, the Scotia-Glenville Traveling Children’s Museum is on track to deliver well over 2,000 educational programs to children and adults this school year.

“As of today, schools have already scheduled 1,930 programs, which is slightly ahead of this time last year,” according to Traveling Museum Board Chairman Raymond Polikoski. “For over 30 years, schools have looked to us as a very affordable way to meet State curriculum standards with unique programs delivered by a highly qualified team of professionals. That reputation will likely put us well over the 2,000 mark for classroom programs this school year.”

On any given school day, the Traveling Museum deploys as many as twenty teachers to classrooms within a fifty mile radius of its Scotia Headquarters.

“Sites as far away as Chatham and Herkimer are now booking our programs,” according to Traveling Museum Director Diana Bennett. “However, we are just as pleased to be working in nearby districts, such as the Schenectady City Schools that have dramatically increased the number of programs they request.”

Since 1978, Traveling Museum programs have reached more than 1.5 million people in the Capital Region. That experience is critical to ensuring Museum teachers are ready to go when a classroom of eager students awaits.

“Being a purely “traveling” museum presents some very unique challenges,” says Bennett. “Most traditional museum exhibits can’t really fit in a car or be handled by a room full of first graders. Throw in a snow day that forces two dozen programs to be rescheduled and you really need a proven system in place.”

Bennett says the key is the Museum teachers themselves. “They have a great reputation for not only being enthusiastic and engaging, but also for being for prompt and professional. They also have the experience that enables them to work seamlessly into the classroom routine and help students better understand important concepts in a fun and hands-on way.”

Along with its relevant programs and dedicated teachers, the Traveling Museum also credits prudent fiscal management to its current success.

“The Museum’s Board of Trustees made adjustments proactively, allowing it to continue to deliver quality programs,” said Board President Raymond Polikoski. While it was a difficult decision to institute temporary furloughs for our office staff, were able to keep our staff working are now in a much better position to weather difficult times.

Town of Glenville to host Winterfest

The Town of Glenville will host its 2011 Winterfest on
Saturday, February 5th, from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
at Indian Meadows Park, 155 Droms Road.

Winterfest is an opportunity to get out and enjoy the park and its many natural features and recreational opportunities, including snowshoeing, ice skating (the rinks are in excellent shape), groomed x-country ski trails, and sledding.

Event participants will include: ECOS, the Environmental Clearinghouse, leading the public on nature walks for Wild Winter Edibles at 12, 1, and 2 PM; the Glenville Rotary providing refreshments; Freemans Bridge Sports, who will bring their trailer of winter sports equipment and give lessons and free trials of snowshoes, x-country skis and more; the Arnold Farm and friends, providing horse drawn sleigh rides through the park; All Seasons Equipment, bringing winter equipment including snowmobiles and snow blowers on display; Amateur Ham Radio Operators, providing information and participation in sending radiograms around the world; Park Planning Commission members teaching “geocaching,” a sport that combines geography, technology and treasure hunting; NYS Encon officers, providing information on the environment, fauna, and outdoor wood boilers, and more.

A campfire will burn throughout the day to warm the toes. Broomball games between the town and the East Glenville Fire department are confirmed, with additional teams to be determined.

Winterfest is held in cooperation with the Town of Glenville Park Planning Commission.

All events are free, and subject to weather and conditions on the day of the event.

Futile Words by Fans of Mohawk Ave & Diner

After news spread of a new 51 unit apartment project a number of concerned residents appealed to the Village Board at their monthly meeting. Little had been known about this project until Nicole Stack, a popular waitress at Scotia Diner, created a Save the Diner and Mohawk Ave! on Facebook.

Unfortunately, before Mayor Kris Kastberg gave residents a turn to speak during “privilege of the floor” he squashed their hopes by announcing the project was already approved by the planning board and the Scotia Diner would be history. Nicole’s efforts came following the monthly meeting of the Village Planning board which had given the green light to developer Bruce Tanski. Mayor Kastberg supports the project telling WRGB the lot has been “relatively rundown” since he moved here in 1982.

The Village Planning board meets on the first Monday of the month and as needed.
According to the official Village website. ”The Planning Board is a 5 member board charged with approving site plans, special use permits, and other developmental approvals. This board also writes developmental codes like architectural guidelines and sign ordinances. The Planning Board also participates in master planning for the Village. The two most common actions performed by this board are the special use permit and the site plan review. These tools insure that new development and construction meet Village guidelines and improve the area where the project is taking place.”

Nicole Stack came prepared with a wide variety of reasons why the board should consider all the regulars who frequent the Scotia Diner and why a large apartment project would diminish our quaint business district.

Scotia Diner, manager and cook Aristotle Kyratzis lets the board know how much he’s done to improve the building while the owner has allowed his Scotia properties to decay.

According to Village officials they’re hoping Metroplex Authority can help the diner relocate since 12 people will be losing their job. See our previous article for a draft look at what our 51+ new neighbors will be living in.

Friends of Scotia Diner Protest new Apartment Project

For a number of years the Village of Scotia has been looking for a developer to find an appropriate use for the vacant corner of Mohawk Ave and South Ballston Ave.

It was once considered for a hotel, a new Village Hall/Firehouse and recently a Rite Aid. The Village Planning Board was willing to accept a new Rite Aid if the drug company could design a building that met with their view of the village character. Rite Aid never did come up with the proper look and they backed out. Yay, Planning Board!

Now the owner of the property has proposed a 51 unit apartment building and the Village Planning Board has approved his plan.

Unfortunately, one of the casualties of the apartment project will be the Scotia Diner which has served the village for generations. A grass roots movement was recently created on Facebook to “Save the Scotia Diner and Mohawk Ave. The Facebook group is encouraging supporters to attend the Village Board Meeting this Tuesday, January 11th, 2011 at 7 PM. Mayor Kris Kastberg has gone on record as a supporter of the apartment project.

Only four days old, the Facebook page continues to gain supporters who are sad to lose this local landmark. Many others are equally dismayed by the addition of a 51 unit rental property along the main entrance to our village.

On December 5th, Scotia Diner showed their community spirit by hosting last months Ginger Bread House contest which is part of our annual Holiday on the Avenue celebration. Doing so they gave up space which could have been used by potentially new and old customers on this cold, busy night.

The Village Planning Board was provided the following information on the new apartment building.

The parcel is 1.7 acres and currently is divided into 7 lots. The parcel is zoned General Business.
The building will have a total of 51 units with 17 units per floor.
     First floor will have 8 one bedroom units and 9 two bedroom units.
     Second floor will have 5 one bedroom units and 12 two bedroom units.
     Third floor will have 5 one bedroom units and 12 two bedroom units.
The proposed building will be 45 feet high.
The apartments will have a blended red brick veneer on the portions of the 3 story areas of the building with the same brick and a complementing earth tone man made stone in alternating areas of the ground level areas of the façade.
The siding will be vinyl and in two colors, alternating between the architecture elements on the upper two stories of the façade. The siding colors will be earth toned clay and wicker.

The applicant’s architect has made efforts to provide a retail look
to the façade facing Mohawk Avenue.
The storefront windows will be opaque transom panels and will give
a commercial atmosphere to the Mohawk Avenue side of the building.
The awnings on the Mohawk Avenue side will be fabric in complementary color to the overall building pallet
The awnings will be fabric with a pipe frame and will be ornamental
in nature

Decks and railings will be brown vinyl.
The proposed apartment building provides an elevator at the center
bend portion of the L-shaped building.
There will be 60 parking spaces.
Snow storage will be plowed to the outer limits of the parking in
most cases. Excessive snow accumulations will be transported off-site.
Dumpster enclosures have been provided in the southeast portion of
the property.

Local Legend Jim Fisk leaves behind many smiles

The news today that Jim Fisk passed away brought back many great memories. Jim was best known for his time on the Freddie Freihofer Show shown daily on WRGB.

Like many my age who grew up in the area I had the privilege of appearing on the local hit show and had my chance to squiggle. Even today a memory hangs in our kitchen.

If you needed bread of other delicious Freihofer baked goods you would hang the sign in your window. The sign let the delivery man know to stop his horse or truck at your house. This is a special keepsake that my wife Cindi knew was special to many of us.

If you click on the photo you can see the larger size and perhaps you can pick me out. I’m the naughty one with his hands on his ears and tongue sticking out.

After his television career on Freddie Freihofer Jim went on to create the local company JIMAPCO. You’ll notice the JIMAPCO logo on most of the maps used in our area.

While my thoughts today are mostly all the great memories I had of Freddie Freihofer they’re also with Jim’s family and friends.

Pytlovany Selected for Town Board

Chris Koetzle. Supervisor, Town of Glenville announced tonight that former Scotia Chief of Police, John C. Pytlovany will be appointed as the newest town board member. Pytlovany will replace outgoing board member Mark A. Quinn who will be leaving the board on March 1st.

John C. Pytlovany

The life long resident of Village of Scotia and graduate of Scotia-Glenville High brings vast local knowledge and experience to the board.

Pytlovany started his police career with the Scotia Police Department in 1980. While working his way up through the ranks, he has served as a patrol officer, a youth aid officer, and a D.A.R.E. instructor.

John was appointed Chief in June of 1997 and has an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Schenectady County Community College. John is a past exalted ruler of Scotia Glenville Elks Lodge #2759 and past president of Scotia Rotary.

He is a member of the International Association of Chief's of Police, The New York State Association of Chief's of Police and is the past President of the Northeastern Chief's of Police Conference. Pytlovany retired February 2010 after nearly 30 years on the Village of Scotia Police force.

Favorite Tips for Online Shopping

While I wrote this article originally for my tech blog it seemed important enough to share on other blogs I maintain.

It’s been five years since media coined the term Cyber-Monday but the truth is everyday is a great shopping day online. I planned on writing an article about the safety of online shopping but noticed everyone was already doing it. Many sites provide the same duplicate tips. So I thought I might include some of the best tips and post them along with my favorites.

Eric Griffith wrote a good article for PC Magazine called
11 Tips for Safe Online Shopping.
One unique tip from Eric was
Don't Tell All
”No online shopping store is going to need your social security number or your birthday to do business. But if a bad-guy gets them, combined with your credit card number for purchases, they can do a lot of damage. When you can, default to giving up the least amount of information.”

It amazes me how many free Email and other password reset schemes still use easy to find information like your high school, pet’s name and birthday. This kind of information is something that you should keep private. When you do answer these questions make up answers that you’ll remember but aren’t accurate.

For years I’ve heard people say they’re afraid to use their credit card online. As long as you see the https your credit card is safer than it is when you give it to the waiter at your favorite restaurant.

Webroot's safety tips for holiday online shopping included a tip that doesn’t just apply to shopping.
"Go straight to the site.
Rather than browse to online retailers through a search engine where you may encounter malicious links, type the store's URL directly in your browser.”

The bad guys are experts at search engine optimization and frequently “poison” search results with web sites you really don’t want to visit. Just because a web site is the first or second listed on Google doesn’t mean it’s safe. In many cases, the opposite it true.

I have some of my own best tips and the following tip was mentioned in all the articles I’ve mentioned so far.

Don’t use Public WiFi
It used to be only a real hacker with proper tools could capture your data when you used a public WiFi connection. Now the tools are available to anyone so shopping or any use of public WiFi comes with a real security danger. One of benefits of smart phone tethering is you can connect your laptop to your phone for a connection instead of using a public WiFi even if it’s free.

When you order is complete don’t be surprised if you’re offered a survey, free shipping or other offer that promises to take $5.00 or more off your last purchase. If you read the fine print you’ll find this check out offer may actually a membership. By accepting the offer you may be agreeing to being billed regularly for a membership you don’t want or need.

Take your time!
Don’t rush. Be sure to check into the shipping policy of the store and/or item you’re going to purchase.

Shipping Costs
There are some nice comparative shopping sites and even apps for your smart phone so you can find the lowest price available. Price isn’t everything. You’ll want to be sure what the shipping costs are. Some times cost is based on price and not weight. Even if they ship in the same box, ordering multiples of the same item stores will multiply the shipping cost.

Shipping Date
Pay attention and make sure the item is in stock. Be sure your ship date is well before you the date you need to have it wrapped and under the tree.

Return Policies
Lots to consider here but the one to watch out is the dreaded restocking fee.

This Veteran's Day, November 11, the Glen Sanders Mansion will be transformed into a 1940s USO-style Canteen to benefit the Scotia-Glenville Traveling Children's Museum. World War II Canteen-style refreshments, big band music and a silent auction will be part of the evening festivities. The event begins with roll call at 7:00 PM. Tickets are just $25.

The scrap metal drive to benefit the museum will be conducted by "Party of Gold." G.I.'s and the guests are encouraged to bring their own gold and silver that is broken, unwanted, or out of style. Party of Gold will test and weigh the metal and issue checks to the owners on the spot. The Museum will receive 15% of the proceeds.

The Museum will also honor Christine Sell as its Teacher of the Year and Mary Ellen Graham from Zoller Elementary in Schenectady as its Classroom Teacher of the Year.

Collins Park, Rotary Circle Project Part 1

I heard yesterday from local film maker Dan Masucci asking if I knew what happen to all the trees in the circle next to the playground in Collins Park. Dan wasn’t the only one worried seeing that a number of scrub trees have been cleared from what is known as Rotary Circle.

While it may not be pretty today the unhealthy trees are being removed as part of a project that will ultimately beautify this area and make it a more usable. For a number of years the village park board has tried to put an improvement project together. This year Scotia Rotary under the leadership of President Cindy Amell has decided to see that something can finally be done to improve this area.

Friends & Neighbors Honor the Life of Kate Pytlovany

Katherine (Kate) Pytlovany, 58, of Scotia, New York, passed away Thursday, June 24, 2010, surrounded by her loving family after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Niskayuna, NY, the daughter of the late Donald and Marguerite Bates.
One of three children, she was predeceased by her two younger brothers, Thomas and David Bates. Kate was a 1970 graduate of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School.

Kate was known to light up any room she walked into. Her sense of humor was second to none, and her "storytelling" skills were beyond compare. She often stated that her greatest achievements were her children and that being a nana was the most unconditional love one could feel. For the sake of her husband and children, Kate sacrificed any personal and career goals to make them always her priority. Her unselfish spirit made her a "mother" to many. Her wisdom and strength made her an incredible friend. Kate's playful love was always evident with John, her devoted husband of 39 years.

Through her support and sacrifices John was able to reach his many goals. She leaves behind for us, her sense of peace, a love of nature, and the ability to forgive and forget.

Katherine is survived by her husband, John Pytlovany of Scotia, NY; her loving son, Charles Pytlovany, also of Scotia; three daughters, Katherine Cavaliere and her husband, John of Fort Drum, NY, Karey Duxbury and her husband, James of Theresa, NY, and Holly Aldinger and her companion, Tom Gleaves of Northville, NY; her nine beloved grandchildren, Alexis, Ashley, Emily, Ella, Felix, Jeff, Lily, Michal, and Nickolas; one daughter-in-law, Jen Smith of Schenectady, NY; a brother-in-law, William Pytlovany; and three sisters-in-law, Cindi Pytlovany, Cathy Bates, and Lynne Gilgore; and several nieces and nephews including Amy and Erica Pytlovany, Christopher Cook, Jennifer Pavone, Courtney and R.J. Steverson, and Megan Gilgore. She was predeceased by her son, Adam Pytlovany.

A memorial service will be Thursday 10 a.m. at the Bond Funeral Home, Broadway and Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours will be Wednesday evening 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Glenville. Contributions may be made in her memory for the Double H Hole in the Woods / Bravehearts Oncology Camp for Women c/o The Katherine Pytlovany Fund, First National Bank of Scotia, 201 Mohawk Avenue, Scotia, NY 12302.

Cereal two is the gut-busting, laugh out loud sequel to Richard Messina's production, "Cereal" first performed at Scotia-Glenville in the fall of 2007.

In fall of 2009, when rumors were whispered of a sequel to "Cereal" being green-lighted the Scotia-Glenville Drama Club buzzed with enthusiasm. Current students along with alumni include a cast that showcase characters old and new. Cereal 2, mocking the murder-mystery genre, is fully equipped with characters full of quirks and personalities that are sure to keep your heads rolling, if you catch my pun.

If you thought Spaceballs was ridiculous be sure to catch this winter's production of Cereal Aisle 2. We'll show what a spoof really is all about.

When I served the residents of Scotia as Park Board Commissioner there was always one topic considered as a big priority. When the Village received a grant to study riverfront development the same topic was discussed at every meeting. When I meet with other board members of Freedom Park Foundation the same topic has been a major concern.
It’s taken some time but I’m pleased to report some progress in stabilizing the property along Schonowee Avenue which holds back the mighty Mohawk River.

Unless you’ve spent some time watching the US Water Ski Show Team or attend concerts at Freedom Park you might not realize how critical this project has been. Over the years much of the river bank has been sweep away. There has been a real threat to losing our popular summer time activities.

By the end of the year phase one of the stabilization project should be compete. In 2010 I hope to report some exciting new benfits available to everyone who enjoys our wonderful natural resource.

Well over a hundred village residents came out on a cold rainy night to let representatives of the United States Post Office that we want our village Post Office left alone. The Post Office on Mohawk Avenue is on the list of those that USPS wants to close to save money.

One after another residents took the microphone to speak about why our post office is special and a necessity to villagers, especially those without transportation.

Susan Savage, Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature details their resolution strongly urging the United States Postal Service to reconsider its proposal to close or consolidate the Scotia Branch Post Office

The Scotia Post Office was founded in 1824 with its current Colonial Revival home completed in 1940. In 1989 the Scotia Post Office was recognized in the National Register of Historic Places.

Since 2002 Cindi and I have had the honor to attend the Scotia-Glenville Prom Walk-In and take photos of the great looking couples. These photos are available at no charge to the school or students. They’re welcome to post them on MyFace or print them out and frame them. Anyone not wanting their photos online can request they be removed by writing to Bill@visitscotia.com.

Every year the numbers grow and this year was no exception. A total of 148 new photos have been posted on VisitScotia.com on our photos page. The quality of the photos has improved since 2002 but some will appear better than others. In some case, too many flashes will throw off our own flash settings but by using two camera’s I’m happy to say I don’t think we missed anyone this year.

For over thirty years, Schenectady County Job Training Agency has coordinated the Summer Youth Employment Program, providing young people with an opportunity to gain valuable work experience. In order to be successful with this program, we rely on the business community to provide youth with a positive, meaningful place to develop their skills. We look for businesses/ agencies who are interested in providing the job tasks for these employees and the supervision, serving as positive role models in helping youth to develop good work habits. Our agency provides all of the wages for their summer work experience as well as an employment counselor to answer any questions and assist with any issues that may arise. Joan Nicole Prince Home Annual Walk

May 2^nd the Joan Nicole Prince Home will be holding their Annual Walk fundraiser in Collins Park. Registration is at 9 AM in Rotary Row and the walk starts at 10 AM.

Located in the Village of Scotia, The Joan Nicole Prince Home provides 24 hour bedside care for two residents at a time in a homelike environment. It is staffed primarily by volunteers and the care provided is completely free of charge to the residents. Laundry, meals, personal care, cleaning and support to our residents and their families are just some of the services our staff and volunteers provide.

Jumpin' Jack's Opening 2009

Scotia-Glenville School District spokesman Robert Hanlon said 200 of the school’s 950 students brought in notes from parents saying they had to leave school between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The district has an attendance policy saying people can leave the building with a parent’s note. However, Hanlon said this was well above the average for excused absences. “We have 15 to 20 a day.”

No, this isn’t a line for the new xBox or iPhone.
It’s 45 minutes before the 2009 opening of Jumpin’ Jack’s.

“Most cited some type of personal business such as a doctor’s or dentist appointment. One parent might have been a bit too honest. “We did have one note that says my child is going to Jumpin’ Jacks, and it’s marked as an illegal absence,” Hanlon said.”

The rain held off until dinner time when the line of umbrella’s still reached along the front of the parking lot. The traditional opening day Pistachio soft ice cream was also in demand.

Public Workshop for Waterfront Study

On Monday, February 23rd a public workshop will be held at Scotia Village Hall at 7:00 PM. As part of efforts to resolve erosion issues, the Village is developing a plan that will prevent erosion and enhance the value of the waterfront. Your feedback and participation is encouraged.

Town of Glenville to host Winterfest

The Town of Glenville will host its annual Winterfest on Saturday, February 7th, from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Indian Meadows Park on Droms Road.

This family-friendly, free event features horse drawn sleigh rides through the park, cross-country ski and snowshoe lessons and equipment demonstrations, skating, skiing, snowshoeing and sledding in the park’s 190 acres, broomball, refreshments, campfire and a skydiving exhibition at 2:00 p.m.

This year’s event will for the first time feature citizen’s (non-competitive) cross-country ski races for youths and adults. Race registration will begin at 11:30, with races beginning at 12 noon. There is no entry fee.

Event participants include: ECOS, the Environmental Clearinghouse, Glenville Rotary, Freemans Bridge Sports, Mohawk Valley Skydiving, East Glenville Fire Department, and Goldstock’s Sporting Goods.

Winterfest is held in cooperation with the Town of Glenville Park Planning.

All events are weather and conditions dependent.

Skating at Indian Meadows Park

The public skating rinks at Indian Meadows Park on Droms Rd. are now open. The season’s early ice storm and heavy snows delayed opening, but the rinks will now be available from sunrise through 9 pm daily, weather and ice conditions permitting. One rink is designated for open skating, and one for hockey. When the entrance gates are closed, the rinks are closed.

The rinks will close on warm days to prevent deterioration of the ice and reopen when conditions allow. There is no charge for public skating, and a warming hut is available during peak usage.

Ski and Snowshoe at Indian Meadows Park

The town of Glenville’s Indian Meadows Park, 155 Droms Road, will be offering groomed cross-country ski (and snowshoe) trails for the first time effective immediately.

A volunteer ski enthusiast will be grooming the lengthy trail system which will soon result in approximately 3 miles of usable surface for both traditional and skating style skiing, as well as snowshoe racing.

Neighbors to the park should note that snowmobile use for grooming will only occur in the early evening time period, and that no other motorized, off-road vehicle use is allowed in the park. Park hours are sunrise to sunset.

Additionally, cross country ski and snowshoe “citizen’s races” will be held in the park in conjunction with Winterfest, scheduled for February 7^th from 11-3. More Winterfest details to follow.

Glenville Snow Ice Emergency Tree Removal

Severe Storm DEBRIS CLEARANCE AND REMOVAL

As soon as downed electrical lines are repaired and the roads are clear, the Town of Glenville Highway Department will begin its debris clearance and removal operation.

Therefore, all debris should be cut into 4 foot lengths and stacked neatly just off the road. Smaller debris should be bundled and tied.

Additional information regarding debris clearance and removal will be available on the Town’s website as it is updated or by calling the Town Highway Garage at 382-1406.

Downed trees and Oak Wilt Disease
The December 12th storm has brought down many trees and branches in Glenville. With the presence of Oak Wilt Disease in the Glen Oaks area, please note:

1. No oak limbs, branches, etc., should be removed from the greater Glen Oaks area.
2. If you are unsure as to the type of tree or limb, do not remove from the neighborhood.
3. Please inform Tree Service contractors that no Oak tree material is to be removed from the neighborhood.
4. All other types of tree material may be removed as needed, and transported elsewhere.

The town of Glenville will coordinate with NYS DEC to determine the best manner to handle downed oak trees/branches, and disseminate information as it becomes available.

While these aren’t necessarily Scotia related items as a local tech geek I’ve been asked for a few recommendations.
It's never too early to start your holiday shopping and this year I have some recommendations I promise will be popular with your loved ones.

Bakugan Starter Pack

My recommendation for kids is Bakugan, Bakugan, Bakugan.
They will be the hottest item under tree this year and you better purchase now. I predict you’ll have a hard time finding these in December.

We’re already a Bakugan family and have already had problems finding new Series 2 packs.

For the adults, I recommend a digital photo frame. We received one last year and love it. Ours came from a company I had never heard of before called SmartParts but it turned out to be one of the best I’ve seen. My biggest surprise is that ten year old photos I took with my first low-res Casio QV-PC 0.23 megapixel camera look great on our digital photo frame.

Mario Kart for Nintendo Wii

I’m not a real gamer but I’ve had a blast with this one. We have grand kids in Germany and every Saturday we connect to the Internet, play Mario Kart and race against the kids in real-time. It would be perfect if they could also integrate it with Wii Speak but for now our unlimited Germany plan with Vonage allows us all to chat on speaker phone while we play.

And for the entire expanded family, get your Nintendo Wii now while they last. Nintendo claims they’ve increased production so there will be plenty on the shelves but I recommend if you plan on a Wii Christmas, order now.

How to Stop and/or Remove AntiVirus 2009

I usually keep my BitsfromBill technical blog separate from my local community posts but this one is so important I wanted to share. For those of you who wonder what I really do besides community activism, this should give you a clue.

I’ve often said, even some of the smartest folks I know can find themselves infected with malware. Last week a family member found themselves with frequent pop-ups telling them they were infected. They didn’t do anything wrong. They just couldn’t stop all the pop ups telling them to download a video codec. They finally gave up and downloaded extortion-ware called Antivirus 2009.

It happen to me today as well. I clicked on a legitimate link and suddenly received the following pop up.

May appear just by being on the Internet, that’s all.

It won’t do you any good to click any button including the X. The result will always be a fake scan by Extortion-ware Anti Virus 2009

Stop here. Clicking the Red X won’t help.

Eventually, most folks give up and end up downloading Antivirus 2009 which turns into Extortion-Ware. They try to convince you that upgrading and paying is the only way to clean up the viruses listed above.

Solution: Ctrl-Alt-Del
The answer to this situation is quick and simple. As soon as you experience your first pop up that can’t be closed by the X in the upper right-hand corner your next step should be Ctrl-Alt-Del. This is your opportunity to open the Windows Task Manager. Check the list of Applications and Kill your browser.

Windows XP Task Manager

You could also use WinPatrol’s Active Task list to kill the browser but since you only need to kill a single task, Ctrl-Alt-Del is even easier. If however you did download AntiVirus 2009 you’ll want WinPatrol so you can sort, select and kill multiple tasks in a single operation. You can also use WinPatrol to “Delete on Reboot” any files which don’t seem to want to go away. WinPatrol users see http://www.winpatrol.com/helpme.html

Your next step is to make sure you’ve downloaded all the available Windows security updates. I typically recommend against automatically installing new Windows updates on the day they’re released. Last month Microsoft did release a number of new security patches. Guess what? IT’S TIME TO UPDATE! If you see a little yellow shield in the lower right-hand corner it may be telling you to update Windows.

Gifford and Kohout for Village Trustees

In the past, we’ve stayed neutral on Village politics but after some serious frustrations with the current mayor and board, it may be time to clean house. This year when you enter the voting booth to pick between McCain and Obama you’ll also have a chance to vote in two new Village trustees.

While this election won’t solve all the problems in the village these candidates represent a good start. They both have the respect we like to see towards community volunteers. Andrew Kohout has served on the Village Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals. Tom Gifford has been one of our volunteer firemen for over 27 years.

You’ll have a chance to meet and discuss your concerns with these candidates this Monday evening. We’ll be hosting a party at Pytlovany Point for Andrew and Tom and you’re all invited with no required fund raising donation.

Election Signs grow in the Village

This years presidential race is sure to bring out many voters but Obama and McCain aren’t the only ones running for office. In the Village of Scotia, two seats on the village board are open for your vote. We also have our own Scotia-Glenville resident and business owner Jim Buhrmaster running for the U.S. Congress.

The local candidates had agreed to wait until this week to start their blitz on lawns around the village. For the next seven weeks you can expect signs around every corner.

Turkeys in Scotia

No, I’m not writing about politicians in Village Hall today. While this isn’t a typical experience in the Village of Scotia, this was the view from my home/office this morning. There were another 4 baby turkeys that aren’t shown in the photo.

As more development is done in Glenville off Freemans Bridge Rd, I suspect this will become more common in other village backyards. This was actually the 4^th day in a row the Gooble-Gooble family was looking for acorns and other turkey treats in the morning.

Price Chopper and Automated Phone Calls

Apparently, our local Price Chopper Supermarket is trying a new guerilla marketing program that includes automated phone calls and ignoring the New York State Do Not Call list. I suspect they get around the law because I do have a Price Chopper advantage card. They consider me an existing customer so I must want phone calls.

I received the following automated phone call today on both our phones.

"Hi , this Cindy from Price Choppers Supermarket calling to tell you how you can shop your food bill and plan the perfect picnic this labor day weekend. Simply look in this Thursday Newspaper to find our ad with a special clip and Shop coupon that will save you $5 of your next purchase of $ 50 or more and since we your week that will be filled with family, friends, food and fun. You'll also find your favorite barbecue items that are sure to make of the summer festivities one to remember. Offers are good thru Saturdays, September 30 at then our Greater capital District Stores. Coupons are available in (foreck?) newspapers . For a complete list of participating newspapers or for more in formation, please call 800-869-xxxx. Thanks."

If automated phone calls bother you as much as they do me I encourage you to call Price Chopper and ask them to stop this kind of intrusive marketing.

Over six years ago I created VisitScotia.com to help folks find information that was only pertinent to the Village of Scotia in New York. I found that when I searched for information I usually received results that were related to Nova Scotia.

Thanks to some friends at Google I'm happy to announce we've created a new search box that is specific to information that has been create specifically for our own Scotia. You'll find the new Scotia search boxes available here on the VisitScotia Blog as well as VisitScotia.com.

The resulting search will point to previous content on VisitScotia, this blog as well as TownofGlenville.org and VillageofScotia.org. Other sites will probably added as I expand the search index.

Neighborhood Environmental Coalition Cleans Up

I’m always excited when I hear about examples of community spirit and activism so I was thrilled to hear about the newest volunteer group in the Village of Scotia.

The Neighborhood Environmental Coalition formed in April of 2008. Their goals then are the same as they are now:

To bring awareness to the littering situation in Scotia, to lead by example by picking litter up twice a month, to encourage business as well as home owners to do their part in helping to keep Scotia clean, and to help the community in anyway we can.

To date they have over 19 volunteers (some from other towns!), and have picked up over 280 pounds of garbage off the streets and sidewalks. Evening "pick-ups" take 1 hour, twice a month and the difference is clear to see. They encourage children attend, as it is a casual affair. If volunteers can make it, then they make it. If they have something else going on, which almost everyone does at some point, that's totally ok. They gladly accept donations to cover costs for bags and gloves, and are always working on getting sponsors.
