School Safety

Next week the we’ll all start to see bright yellow school buses on village streets.
School begins on Thursday, September 7th.
Never pass a stopped school bus.

In case you’d like a reminder, the Governors Traffic Safety Committee says…

  • It is illegal - and very dangerous - to pass a stopped school bus when the large red lights located on top of the bus are flashing. Flashing lights mean the bus is picking up or discharging students.
  • You must stop whether you are approaching the school bus from the front or overtaking it from the rear.
  • You must always stop for flashing red lights, even on divided and multilane highways and on school grounds.
  • The first-time fine for illegally passing a school bus is a $250 fine, 5 points on your license, and/or possibly 30 days in jail.
  • Worse yet, the memory of hitting or killing a child may be one you carry for the rest of your life!

Burners U.K. Final Concert?

One of the more public contributions made by BillP Studios is our support for the Freedom Park Foundation.  This year and last we’ve had the honor of sponsoring a concert by a large crowd pleaser, the Burners U.K.

The Burners U.K.

The concert this year was flooded out and rescheduled for September 6th.  This is a special date because normally, the Freedom Park season is over and even Jumpin’ Jack’s is closed.  It may be even more special in that it “could” be the last time we’ll see the Burners in Freedom Park.

Last Friday members of the Burners U.K email list received shocking news.

THE BURNERS U.K. ANNOUNCE THEY WILL GO ON HIATUS AS OF JANUARY 1, 2007

“We do not have any musical plans as a unit beyond that date”, says vocalist J Yager.  “This hiatus will allow band members to explore new musical directions, and to take themselves to the next level in their careers.”

Yager says while there is no definite date or plan for the band to reunite in the future, he does not rule out that possibility.   “It’s not a break up, per se it’s an opportunity for each of us to explore new opportunities,  and then at some point down the road, see where we are.” he says.”

The Burners still have a schedule of concerts up for the rest of the year, but this may be the last one at Freedom Park for a while.  So join us on September 6th for a very special night.

Blotto at Freedom Park

The sun was out but the humidity was low for a great concert, Saturday night.  A fun Freedom Park crowd turned out to see regional favorite, Blotto. Their original music had the crowd dancing and laughing as they waited for Blotto’s signature song, “I wanna be a lifeguard”. A video of Botto’s popular tune was one of the videos featured on the first day of MTV’s launch 25 years ago.

Collins Park Water Cleanest Ever

Park Supervisor Jim Marx announced today that water tests have come back indicating that Collins Lake is ready to swim!

This is great news for the village as temperatures near 100 degrees.  Between the use of the herbicide Sonar to kill non-native weeds, hazing efforts by SavetheGeese volunteers and the new bubbler aeration system, contaminants were less then 10% of unacceptable values.

The best news for me was a confirmation that springs feeding the lake were tested and proved to be clean.  At the recommendation of testing labs, a “source sample” method was used to test the spring water.  In the past, water sampled was outside the spring entrance but because of stagnant water and run-off from the high banks this was considered a contaminated sampling technique. Recent tests included drilling a few inches into the source of the spring water and confirmed it was not the source of any problems.
